Shankar graduated from Madras University, India with a Bachelor of Technology in Chemical Engineering in 1984. He spent nine years with Futura Polyester, with assignments in R&D, manufacturing, and projects in polyester fiber, yarn, and PET resin. He then worked for Texmaco Group in Indonesia for five years in projects, building four polyester plants. After that, he worked for Reliance Industries in India for a year.

In November of 1999, Shankar moved to the USA and joined TiePet in North Carolina where his assignments were to complete the conversion of the plant from fiber grade to packaging grade and streamline manufacturing. He also served as their Technical Manager and got promoted to Plant Manager in 2005. Meanwhile, in 2003 TiePet was bought by Indorama Ventures and the name was changed to StarPet Inc.

Shankar became the head of PET operations in North America for Indorama in 2011 when Indorama bought the PET assets of Invista in the USA and Mexico. In 2016, after Indorama bought the PTA, PX & NDC assets of BP, Shankar was moved to head that business and he relocated to Alabama. In 2020, Shankar became the CEO of Indorama’s Global PET recycling Business. His mandate is to grow Indorama’s PET recycling footprint four times by 2025 through both mechanical and enhanced recycling.

Shankar completed his Executive MBA from Fuqua School of Business, Duke University in 2014.

Shankar and his wife, Sharmila, have been married for 32 years and reside in Huntsville, AL. Shankar & Sharmila have a 22-year-old son, Shiva who is a Graduate of Political Science & Philosophy from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.
