In 2019, we outlined five major trends that we expect to “change the game” in the +$900 billion packaging industry, thereby raising the bar for performance over the next five to ten years. In 2020, as a consequence of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have seen the strong emergence of food safety and hygiene concerns as a new sixth key industry-shaping trend. We have also seen how the COVID-19 pandemic has further reshaped our original five megatrends with the biggest changes being a dramatic shift to online shopping and acceleration of consumers’ sustainability concerns. So, what is now in store for the packaging industry in the Next Normal up to 2030 and how can companies navigate these choppy waters? In our presentation, we will take an updated look on what trends will be shaping the packaging industry and address how packaging companies must rethink how to move to their next normal (“intuition resets”).
